Stephen Harrison, cello, and Co-Artistic, Director of the Ives Collective is Senior Lecturer at Stanford University. He returned to his native Bay Area to cofound the Stanford String Quartet. In 1999 he helped form the Ives String Quartet with whom he recorded the complete quartets of Quincy Porter for the Naxos label. A graduate of Oberlin College and Boston University, he has been cellist of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players since 1985 and has toured internationally with the Stanford and Ives quartets and the San Francisco Symphony. He has recorded for the Delos, CRI, New Albion and Newport Classics labels. In addition to performing many summers at the Telluride Music Festival, Stephen has served on the faculties of the Pacific Music Festival, the Orfeo and Schlern International Music Festivals (Italy), the Rocky Ridge Music Center and the SoCal Chamber Music Workshop. He is currently principal cellist at the Mendocino Music Festival, where he also serves as faculty for the festival’s Emerging Artists program.
