Who can attend?
  • CMNC workshops are open to intermediate and advanced string, wind and piano players who are 18 years or older. We require that you have some chamber music experience prior to applying. However, we do accept beginners in pre-formed groups.
  • CMNC accepts players on the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinet, French horn, bassoon and piano. Other instruments may be accepted in pre-formed groups or at the discretion of the workshop director.
How are music and group assignments made?
  • Group formations and musical assignments are one of the most important tasks of the workshop organizers, who strive to make the best possible matches of people and music.
  • The assignments are made with consideration of musical skill level, chamber music experience, past assignments, and attendee requests.
  • The information you provide on your application is instrumental in helping us match you with the best possible group and music
  • Individuals may request a specific piece or genre of music when they apply, and the workshop organizers will do their best to accommodate you within the constraints of the mix of attendees.
What is chamber music coaching?
  • The primary role of CMNC coaches is to help your group improve and refine your playing as an ensemble, rather than focus on the technique of individual players.
  • Coaches help their groups understand the music, advise on tempo, interpretation and dynamics, and raise the overall level of your musicality and expressiveness.
  • Coaches can also provide guidance on tricky rhythms, entrances and exits, and help keep more challenging passages on track.
What is a pre-formed group?
  • A pre-formed group is a chamber music group, trio or larger, formed by individuals outside of the workshop.
  • Your group decides on the piece, perhaps a movement or more, works on it prior to the workshop, and comes prepared to be coached as a group.
  • You must bring your own parts as well as a separate score for the coach; all parts should be numbered.
  • Pre-formed groups are a good way to attend CMNC if you are new to chamber music.
What is a master class?
  • CMNC organizes multiple master classes on Saturday afternoon.
  • Each master class consists of two coaches and four groups of players.
  • Each group takes a turn performing and receives feedback from a coach they did not work with that day. The other groups listen and learn from each coach’s feedback as well.
What is a performance sampler?
  • CMNC organizes an optional performance sampler on Sunday afternoon.
  • Any group who wishes to share the music they’ve worked on can participate.
  • All groups decide by midday whether they’ll perform or not, and a program is drawn up. Everyone is invited to stay and listen, even if you decide not to play.
  • Groups play an excerpt or movement for up to 10 minutes, and the audience enjoys hearing the range of music and ensembles that were rehearsed throughout the day.
What is freelancing?
  • Freelancing is an informal gathering of musicians to sight read music that is usually borrowed from the CMNC Library.
  • Freelancing typically happens after dinner on Saturday, but some players also find time to freelance during meals and breaks.
  • If you’d like to freelance, you’re encouraged to take the initiative to form a group or ask to join a group, but a freelance coordinator will also be available to help everyone find a group to play with.
  • Once you agree to join a group, you should not drop out to join another group.
  • Freelancing is a great way to catch up with old music friends, and make new ones!
How are workshop fees calculated?
  • CMNC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Fees are calculated to cover the workshop budget which includes facility rental costs, catering, coach fees, and workshop materials, among other expenditures. All board members volunteer their time to help make the workshop successful.
Is lodging included in the workshop fee?
  • No, lodging is not included in the fee. For the convenience of anyone wishing to stay overnight, you can find links to local lodging/travel sites on the Next Workshop page.
