Bio
A native of Northumberland, England, Sandy Wilson co-founded the Alexander String Quartet in NYC, together with colleagues from the Yale School of Music in 1981. The ensemble relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1990 and devoted most of their professional energies to the development of the Quartet’s international touring and teaching career until its retirement in 2025. Sandy completed graduate studies at the Royal Danish Conservatory in Copenhagen receiving Danish Government and Sophus Berendsen Awards. He performed as guest with the Royal Chapel Orchestra while studying composition with Niels Vigo Bentzon and cello with Erling Blöndal-Bengtsson. He became principal cellist of the Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft Orchestra in Lucerne, Switzerland before moving to the United States where he completed postgraduate work at Yale University with Aldo Parisot, Otto Werner Mueller and the Tokyo Quartet. Mr. Wilson taught for 35 years as Co-Director with his ASQ colleagues of the Morrison Chamber Music Instructional Program at San Francisco State University and as Ensemble in Residence of San Francisco Performances. He currently serves on the board of the Crowden School.
